Coffee and Calls

This idea has been percolating for awhile.

My morning coffee: a piping hot, creatine- and collagen-enhananced, soy cappuccino is a perimenopausal masterpiece and brings me such joy in one little mug. It’s a little thing with big implications!

In a more global sense, agency and freedom of expression also bring me great joy. Afterall, they are the impetus and purpose of this blog: to use my agency to create a space to freely express my joy and give witness to the joy of others in a world where such sentiment is seen as weakness rather than the powerful protest that it is.

So, I am joy focused. But it is indisputable that my country is a raging dumpster fire at the moment, and to ignore that, even with the luxury of living on the other side of the world, would be standing on the wrong side of history. Believe me my hearts breaks hard from afar too! But, here is where the joy of agency and freedom of expression come into play. When coupled with my coffee, this trifecta makes me feel as though it is me who is on fire in the most excellent way!

You see, every morning while sipping my coffee (bliss) in Tokyo, I make a series of calls to my representatives in the United States (agency). As a constituent of Westchester County in New York, I have Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand as well as Representative George Latimer on speed dial, and every morning Tokyo time, I let them know where I stand on the issues du jour, and how I intend to vote (freedom of expression). Often I leave messages because of the time difference, but occasionally I get to speak to some one too! Coffee and calls. It’s a delightful mix of agency, freedom of speech and caffeine that set the tone for my day.

And, the tone of choice? Joy!
